What is a .in domain?

.in is the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) for India. It is run by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), a not-for-profit company under the Ministry of Electronics and IT. Anyone can register one, in India or abroad, and every registrant completes NIXI's eKYC.

NIXI's rules, in plain words

The registry sets these for every .in name, whoever you buy it from.

  1. eKYC after you register

    NIXI emails the registrant contact a link to confirm the email address and complete eKYC. Do it promptly: until it's done, the registry can suspend the domain. KYC is required under CERT-In's guidelines (IT Act 2000, Section 70B).

  2. Real owner details

    The registrant's name, address, email and phone must be accurate and kept up to date. Names with false details can be suspended.

  3. No WHOIS privacy

    Privacy protection isn't offered on .in, unlike .com or .io. A business email and office address are a good choice for the owner contact.

  4. No auctions or speculation

    NIXI doesn't allow .in names to be auctioned or sold speculatively. Names held to resell can be put on hold without notice.

What people ask before registering a .in.

Can a foreigner or NRI register a .in domain?

Yes. NIXI has never limited .in to Indian nationals. Registrants outside India complete the same eKYC and may be asked for identity documents.

Why can't I turn on WHOIS privacy for .in?

The .in registry doesn't offer it. Privacy protection is available on extensions like .com and .io, but not on .in, so use accurate business contact details for the owner.

What happens if I don't complete NIXI's eKYC?

NIXI can suspend the domain until it's done. The email goes to the registrant contact you gave at checkout. If you can't find it, message us on WhatsApp, any time, and we'll help.

Should I choose .in or .com?

If most customers are in India, .in is a strong local choice, and Google reads it as a site aimed at India. If you sell worldwide, lead with .com. Many businesses register both and point one at the other.

How much does a .in domain cost to renew?

₹1,099 a year incl. 18% GST today. The renewal price is shown before you pay, and we email reminders before the domain expires; renewals aren't automatic.
